You can create a Steam account with temp mail: enter the address twice, click the link Steam emails you, and finish setup. The catch is Steam Guard. As of October 2026, Steam sends its login codes to that same inbox by default, so switch to the Steam Mobile Authenticator or a long-lived email before your temporary address expires.

Can you use a temporary email for Steam?

Yes. As of October 2026, Steam's sign-up page at store.steampowered.com/join asks for:

  • an email address, typed twice
  • your country of residence
  • a CAPTCHA
  • confirmation that you're 13 or older and agree to the Steam Subscriber Agreement (in some countries, users under 16 need parental consent)

Steam then asks you to check for an email to complete your account setup. Its troubleshooting note admits that "some email providers just don't work with Steam" and suggests a different address if the message never arrives. Steam doesn't say which providers, and it doesn't publish a blocklist.

One Steam quirk helps here: the same email can sit on more than one account. If an address is already in use, the sign-up page offers to make a new, separate account anyway.

How to create a Steam account with temp mail

  1. Open ILoveTempMail and copy your free temp mail address. No sign-up needed.
  2. Go to store.steampowered.com/join and paste the address into both email fields.
  3. Pick your country, complete the CAPTCHA, tick the 13+ box, and continue.
  4. Switch to ILoveTempMail. The inbox refreshes about every 15 seconds while the tab is open, so Steam's email shows up without a reload.
  5. Tap Open link. ILoveTempMail detects the main verification link, so you don't need to dig through the message.
  6. Return to the Steam tab and finish by choosing your account name and password.
  7. Save both in a password manager. You'll need them once the temporary inbox is gone.

Steam Guard: why temp mail needs a plan

Steam's Steam Guard FAQ explains the problem:

  • Steam Guard turns on by default once your email is verified and you've restarted Steam twice.
  • With email Steam Guard, every login from an unrecognized device needs a code sent to your email.
  • To get a fresh code, you exit Steam and log back in, which triggers a new email.
  • Steam warns that anyone who controls your verified email can reset your password.

While your temporary inbox is active, this is quick. ILoveTempMail usually spots the code and shows a one-tap Copy code button, even on the inbox row. If a code isn't highlighted, it's in the body of the email. The trouble starts when the inbox expires:

Where you created the addressHow long it lastsWhat that means for Steam
ILoveTempMail website, no account (guest)5 daysGood for verifying and a few logins. Set up a lasting option within those 5 days.
An account linked with the ILoveTempMail phone app30 days by default (Pro can extend it)More time, but codes and password resets still stop once it expires.

After that, an account that relies on email Steam Guard can't log in on a new device or reset its password by email. Fixing it from a browser also requires a phone number on the account.

Set up the Steam Mobile Authenticator

Steam calls authenticator codes from your phone its best level of account security. The steps from its setup walkthrough as of October 2026:

  1. Install the Steam Mobile app and sign in. You land on the Steam Guard tab, where you choose Add authenticator.
  2. Enter a phone number Steam can text. If you don't have one, use the "I don't have access to a phone number" link below the Next button.
  3. Enter the code Steam sends to that number.
  4. Write down the recovery code and store it somewhere safe. Steam tells you not to skip this step.

From then on, you confirm sign-ins by scanning a QR code, approving a notification, or typing the app's code, which changes every 30 seconds.

Set it up early if you plan to trade. Steam's Mobile Authenticator FAQ says trades and Community Market listings created before you add the authenticator, or during the first 7 days after, are held for 15 days. Valve also recommends adding a phone number for easier recovery, and it doesn't accept VoIP numbers.

Or move to a long-lived email

If you'd rather keep email Steam Guard, change the contact email while you're still signed in. Steam's contact email FAQ describes it this way:

  1. In the Steam client, open Settings (Preferences on Mac), then the Account tab, and select Change contact email.
  2. Enter your Steam password and the new address, then click Next.
  3. Click the verification link Steam sends to the new address, keeping the Steam dialog open.
  4. Return to Steam and click Finish.

If you're already locked out because Steam Guard emails can't reach you, Steam's FAQ offers a browser reset of the email address for accounts that have a phone number, with Steam confirming the change by text. Without email or phone, Steam Support asks for proof of ownership, such as details of a payment method or a retail key used on the account.

"Long-lived" can mean your main email, an alias, or an ILoveTempMail Pro mailbox. Pro can extend a mailbox's expiry, or receive mail on a custom domain you own, so the address doesn't disappear on a fixed date.

Other Steam limits that have nothing to do with email

  • Limited user accounts. Steam's Limited User Accounts FAQ says new accounts can't send friend requests, use the Community Market, trade, or post links in the Community until they've spent at least $5.00 USD in the Steam store. Free games, demos, and gifts you receive don't count. Steam says it does this because people who spam and phish often run dummy accounts.
  • Phone numbers act as identity. You can share one number across accounts, but Steam may treat those accounts as the same identity. In games where developers enable it, a VAC or game ban on one account applies to every account on that number.

If Steam's email doesn't arrive

  • Check the basics. Confirm the address in both fields, wait a few minutes, and look for mail from steampowered.com. Steam's help names [email protected] and [email protected] as its senders.
  • Try a new address. Steam itself suggests a different address when one doesn't work. A new ILoveTempMail address may come from a different domain, and with Pro you can pick the domain or use your own.
  • Read more. Our guides to temp mail not receiving emails and why websites block disposable emails cover the common causes.

Temp mail suits a test account, a free-to-play trial, or keeping store newsletters out of your main inbox. It isn't a tool for spam or for dodging a ban, and our guide on whether temporary email is safe and legal explains why. If your gaming group lives on Discord, our guide to temp mail for Discord covers its stricter email rules.

FAQ

Does Steam send Steam Guard codes by email?

Yes, by default. Once your email is verified and you've restarted Steam twice, logging in from an unrecognized device needs a code from your inbox, unless you use the Steam Mobile Authenticator instead.

Can I change my Steam email after the temp mail expires?

If you're still signed in to the Steam client, Steam's FAQ describes changing it with your password and a link sent to the new address. If you're locked out, you need a phone number on the account, or proof of ownership through Steam Support.

Do I need to spend $5 on a new Steam account?

Only to unlock community features such as adding friends, trading, and the Community Market. Until then, the account works as a limited user account.

Can I use the same email for two Steam accounts?

Yes. If an address is already in use, Steam's sign-up page offers to create a new, separate account anyway. Both accounts' Steam Guard emails then land in that one inbox.

Is temp mail a good idea for my main Steam account?

Not on its own. For an account you'll spend money on, add the Steam Mobile Authenticator and a phone number, or switch to a long-lived email, before the temporary inbox expires.
