You can use a temporary email for Instagram: sign up with a free temp mail address and enter the confirmation code Instagram sends to it. One warning, as of October 2026: if you get locked out after losing the sign-up email and never linked Facebook, Instagram says it can't give you access, so switch to a lasting address before the temporary one expires.

Does Instagram accept a temporary email?

Instagram's sign-up instructions let you create an account with either an email address or a mobile number. You confirm it with a code, then add a password, your birthday, a name, and a username. You must be at least 13, and Instagram asks for your own birthday even if the account is for a business or a pet.

Instagram doesn't publish a list of blocked email domains, and a temporary address receives the confirmation code like any other inbox. The weak point comes later. The same help page tells you to choose an address only you can access, because if you log out and forget your password, you'll need that inbox to get back in.

So why use a separate address at all? Instagram's page on contact info says it may use your email to send notifications and promotions, to recommend accounts based on your contacts, and to match your contact information with data from other sources to improve ads. A different address keeps your main email out of all that for a side account, a themed page, or a quick test.

How to create an Instagram account with temp mail

  1. Get a temporary address on your phone. Use the ILoveTempMail iOS or Android app, or open free temp mail on the website and tap Show QR code to move the address to your phone. Copy it.
  2. In the Instagram app, tap Create new account and paste the temporary address. If the app asks for a mobile number first, pick the option to sign up with email. Tap Next.
  3. Instagram emails you a confirmation code. In ILoveTempMail it appears with a Copy code button right on the inbox row, so you can copy it without opening the email. Paste it and tap Next.
  4. Create a password, enter your own birthday, add a name, and choose a username.
  5. Agree to the terms. You can skip the profile photo for now.
  6. Save the password in a password manager right away. Once the temporary inbox is gone, it's your main way back in.

Codes like Instagram's are the easy case for temp mail. Our guide to temporary email for verification covers codes and links in general, and how ILoveTempMail works explains the inbox itself.

Plan for the expiry before it happens

How long the address keeps working depends on where you created it:

Where you created the addressHow long it lastsWhat that means for Instagram
ILoveTempMail website, no account (guest)5 daysFine for a test account. If you'll keep it, switch emails within those 5 days.
An account linked with the ILoveTempMail phone app30 days by default (Pro can extend it)Time to receive security emails, then move to a lasting address without rushing.

Here's what changes once the temporary mailbox expires:

  • Email password resets stop working. Instagram says you need an up-to-date email or mobile number to reset a forgotten password.
  • Re-confirmation requests fail. Instagram may ask you to confirm your email again, for example when time has passed since you last added or updated it. An expired inbox can't receive that code.
  • Your registration info goes stale. Instagram's Terms of Use ask for accurate and up-to-date information, including registration information.
  • Recovery gets hard. Instagram's lost-access page says that without access to the sign-up email, and without a linked Facebook account, it can't give you access to the account.

How to switch Instagram to your real email

Here Instagram is more forgiving than Discord or TikTok. As long as you're logged in, you can change the email from your profile even if you can no longer open the old inbox. Staying logged in is what counts. The steps as of October 2026:

  1. Open Settings, then Accounts Center, then Profiles and personal details. Meta is moving some people to Meta Account settings, so your labels may differ.
  2. Under contact information, add the email you plan to keep.
  3. Accept the change from the new inbox. Instagram also emails the old address from [email protected] with a link to reverse the change in case it wasn't you.
  4. Once the new email is confirmed, remove the temporary one. Instagram lets you remove a confirmed email as long as at least one confirmed email or mobile number stays on the account.

Add a second way back in

  • Two-factor authentication. In Accounts Center > Password and security > Two-factor authentication, choose an authentication app or text message codes. With SMS, Instagram sends a 6-digit code whenever someone logs in from a device it doesn't recognize. An authentication app keeps working no matter what happens to any inbox.
  • A phone number. It gives you another reset route, but it also ties the account to your number. If you turn on SMS codes, the number you enter becomes the confirmed number on the account.
  • A Facebook link. Linking Facebook is another recovery path, but it connects the account to your main identity. For a separate account, that defeats the point.

If Instagram rejects the address or the code doesn't arrive

  • Give it a minute. On the website, the ILoveTempMail inbox refreshes about every 15 seconds while the tab is open. Then request a new code in Instagram.
  • Check the address. Make sure you pasted all of it, with no missing characters.
  • Try a new address. A new one may come from a different domain. With ILoveTempMail Pro you can choose the domain yourself, or receive mail on your own custom domain, which sites can't tell is disposable.

Our guides to temp mail not receiving emails and why websites block disposable emails cover the rest.

One limit applies whichever email you use. Instagram's Terms say you can't use Instagram if Instagram previously disabled your account, and you can't create accounts in unauthorized ways, such as with automation. A temporary email is for privacy, not for coming back after a ban. See is temporary email safe and legal for where the lines are.

Privacy tips for a separate Instagram account

  • Start it as a new account. If you create it from an existing Facebook or Instagram login, Instagram adds both accounts to the same Accounts Center with connected experiences. Choose Create new account instead.
  • Use a different name. Instagram notes that matching first and last names across accounts in one Accounts Center can help people find you through recommendations.
  • Skip contact syncing. Instagram can use your contacts to recommend accounts to follow, which links this account back to people you know.
  • Your email stays hidden. Instagram treats your email and phone number as private profile information that only you can see, so the temporary address doesn't show up for followers.

Using Facebook too? The same Accounts Center rules apply there, covered in temp mail for Facebook.

FAQ

Can I make an Instagram account without a phone number?

Yes. Instagram's sign-up accepts an email address instead of a mobile number. Features such as SMS two-factor codes need a phone number, and Instagram may ask you to confirm your contact details later.

What happens if my temp email expires while I'm still logged in?

Change it right away in Accounts Center. Instagram sends the confirmation to the new address, so you don't need the old inbox for that step.

What if I'm logged out and the temporary email is gone?

Instagram says it can't give you access if you can't reach the sign-up email and never linked Facebook. A confirmed phone number on the account can still reset your password, which is why a second contact method matters.

Does a temporary email make my Instagram account anonymous?

No. It keeps your main email out of Instagram, but Instagram still asks for your real birthday, and anything you link through Accounts Center connects back to you.

Is it allowed to use a temporary email on Instagram?

Instagram's Terms ask for accurate, up-to-date registration information. Treat the temporary address as a starting point, and switch to one you'll keep if the account sticks around.
