A throwaway email for Reddit lets you verify a separate account without tying it to your main inbox. As of October 2026, Reddit's email sign-up sends a 6-digit code, so you need a working inbox for a few minutes. A temporary address covers that, and Reddit's newsletters and notifications never reach your real email.
Do you need an email for a Reddit throwaway account?
Older guides say you can skip the email on Reddit. Reddit's current help center describes three ways to sign up, and the email route asks for a 6-digit code sent to your inbox:
Accounts without an email do exist, such as phone sign-ups and accounts that never registered one. Reddit still recommends adding an address, because without one it can't help you reset a forgotten password. Forget the password and you're locked out once you log out.
For a throwaway, a temporary email is the lightest option. It verifies the account without connecting it to your phone, your Google or Apple account, or your main inbox.
What Reddit uses your email for
Reddit's help center lists a few jobs for the address on your account (why verify with an email):
- Password resets. This is the one that matters most for throwaways. More below.
- Emails from Reddit. Newsletters about trending posts, notifications about chats, replies and mentions, and administrative messages about your account.
- A trust signal. Reddit says verifying with a common provider such as Gmail, Apple, Hotmail, Outlook or Yahoo is one way it judges that you're likely to use Reddit in good faith. It also says your own personal domain or another domain is "okay too," because it has other ways to tell.
Posting rules add one more reason to verify. Communities can require a minimum account age, karma, or a verified email address before you post, and Reddit's Poster Eligibility Guide shows which of these you're missing when you try to create a post. A new throwaway without a verified email may not be able to post in some communities.
How to make a Reddit throwaway account with temp mail
- Open ILoveTempMail and copy the temporary address.
- On reddit.com, click Log In, then Sign up at the bottom of the pop-up. In the Reddit app, you're asked to sign up when you open it.
- Choose email, paste the address and select Continue.
- In ILoveTempMail, wait for Reddit's message (the inbox refreshes about every 15 seconds) and tap Copy code on the inbox row. You don't need to open the email. Paste the 6-digit code into Reddit.
- Choose a username. Reddit usernames can't be changed, so pick one with no link to your main account.
- Create a password and store it in a password manager. Reddit then offers to set up a passkey, which is optional.
Keep the throwaway separate, and within the rules
Reddit is relaxed about multiple accounts. Its help center says you're welcome to create multiple accounts and can even verify them with the same email. So why use a separate address? Verifying a throwaway with your main email links the two in Reddit's records and in every message Reddit sends you. A fresh temporary address keeps them apart.
Two lines not to cross:
- Don't vote from more than one account on the same posts or comments. Reddit treats that as vote manipulation.
- Don't use a throwaway to return to a community that banned you. Reddit calls that ban evasion, a violation of the Reddit Rules that can lead to a sitewide suspension.
The expiry problem: plan for password resets
An ILoveTempMail guest address lasts 5 days. A mailbox in an account linked with the ILoveTempMail app lasts 30 days by default, and Pro can extend it. After that, Reddit's password reset emails go nowhere, and a forgotten password means the throwaway is gone for good.
Match the setup to how long you need the account:
To add or change the address, open Account Settings on reddit.com and click Email address under General. In the app, go to Settings, tap your username under Account Settings, then use Basic Settings. Reddit then emails a verification link to the new address. If that address is on ILoveTempMail, for example on your own domain with Pro, Open link handles it in one tap.
How ILoveTempMail works covers guest and linked mailboxes in more detail.
If Reddit won't accept your address
- Get a new address. Choose New address in ILoveTempMail. A new random address may be on a different domain.
- Check, then try again. If the code hasn't arrived after a minute or two, look for a typo in the address and start the email step again. Temp mail not receiving emails covers other causes.
- Use a domain you own. Reddit says personal domains are fine. With ILoveTempMail Pro, you can receive mail on your own domain by adding one MX record.

FAQ
Can you make a Reddit account without an email?
As of October 2026, Reddit's help center lists a phone number (in certain countries) or a Google or Apple account as alternatives to email. Without an email on the account, Reddit can't help you reset a forgotten password.
Is it OK to have a throwaway Reddit account?
Yes. Reddit says you're welcome to create multiple accounts. Don't use them to vote on the same posts or comments, or to return to a community that banned you.
Why can't my new throwaway post in some subreddits?
Communities can require a minimum account age, karma or a verified email address. Verify your email right away, then check the Poster Eligibility Guide that appears when you try to create a post.
Is a burner email the same as a throwaway email?
Yes. Both mean a short-lived address you use instead of your real one. Here's what temporary email is and how it works.
What happens to my throwaway when the temp mail expires?
The account keeps working as long as you know the password. You can't reset it by email anymore, so save the password or add a long-lived address before the mailbox expires.
