You can sign up for ChatGPT with temp mail if OpenAI accepts the address, but it suits short-lived and test accounts best. OpenAI verifies your email before approving a sign-up, may email a six-digit code when you log in from a new device, and lets you change the email only while you can still open the old inbox.
Do you need a ChatGPT account at all?
Maybe not. As of October 2026, OpenAI says ChatGPT can be used before creating an account at chatgpt.com. Logged out, you get one conversation at a time, and it isn't saved beyond the current browser session. OpenAI says this isn't available in Europe yet, except in the UK.
An account adds saved chat history, sharing, data export and custom instructions. If you want those without handing over your main email, that's where a temporary email for ChatGPT fits.
What OpenAI requires to sign up
As of October 2026, this is what OpenAI's help center says about each step:
Sources: OpenAI's articles on sign-up verification emails, phone verification and login verification. OpenAI also says email or an authenticator app can't replace phone verification when it's required, so a temporary email won't get you past that step.
In some countries you can sign up with only a phone number. OpenAI notes that upgrading to a paid plan still requires verifying an email (phone-only sign-ups).
How to sign up for ChatGPT with temp mail
- Open ILoveTempMail and copy your temporary address.
- Go to chatgpt.com and choose Sign up. Type in the address rather than picking Continue with Google, Microsoft or Apple, which would use your main account.
- Create a password.
- Switch to ILoveTempMail. OpenAI's help center describes a Verify email address link in the message, so tap Open link. If the sign-up screen asks for a code instead, tap Copy code on the inbox row and paste it.
- Finish any remaining steps on screen, then save the password in a password manager.
The inbox refreshes about every 15 seconds while the tab is open. If nothing arrives, see temp mail not receiving emails. Our verification guide covers codes and links in general.
Does OpenAI block disposable email addresses?
OpenAI doesn't publish a list of email domains it accepts or refuses, and as of October 2026 its help center has no article about disposable addresses. Some temporary domains may still be refused at sign-up, as they are on many sites. Why websites block disposable emails explains how that filtering works.
If the sign-up form refuses your address:
- Get a new address. Choose New address in ILoveTempMail. A new random address may use a different domain.
- Use a domain you own. ILoveTempMail Pro receives mail on your own domain once you add one MX record. See temp mail with a custom domain.
- Use your regular email, especially for an account you plan to keep.
For personal accounts, OpenAI recommends an email address you personally own and control (in the same ChatGPT home page article). Its Terms of Use also ask for accurate and complete information when you register, and following them is your responsibility.
The catch: login codes and email changes
A ChatGPT account keeps relying on its email long after sign-up.
Login codes. OpenAI may add a verification step when you log in from a new or unrecognized device or an unusual location, or when you update sensitive account details. One method is a six-digit code sent to your email from [email protected] or [email protected]. If you're signed in to the ChatGPT mobile app, OpenAI may send a push approval instead, but the fallback is an email code. Once the mailbox has expired, that code has nowhere to go. Password reset emails have the same problem.
Email changes. As of October 2026, you can change your ChatGPT email on the web under Settings > Account by clicking your email address. You need access to the inbox of the current address, and OpenAI says support can't make an exception. Also note:
- You can change it twice per 24 hours and 20 times over the life of the account.
- You can't change it in the ChatGPT iOS or Android apps.
- The old address isn't released for use on another account.
If you can't change the email, the fallback is a new account, and OpenAI can't transfer your ChatGPT history or workspaces to it.

How ILoveTempMail works explains the two mailbox types.
When temp mail makes sense for ChatGPT
Good fits:
- Trying account features before deciding which email to use long term, then switching while the temporary inbox still works.
- A short-lived test account, for example to see how a feature behaves for a brand-new user.
Poor fits:
- Paid plans. If you lose access to the email, OpenAI's answer is to cancel the subscription and subscribe again on a new account.
- History you want to keep. Chats, projects and custom GPTs stay with the account, so the account needs an address that lasts.
- The API. ChatGPT and the API Platform share one account and email, and your first API key needs phone verification anyway.
For a lasting account that still keeps your main inbox private, an address on a domain you own fits OpenAI's "own and control" advice, and ILoveTempMail Pro can forward a mailbox on that domain to your real inbox.

FAQ
Does ChatGPT require a phone number to sign up?
As of October 2026, OpenAI says phone verification isn't generally required to create an account or use ChatGPT. You may be asked for a number when you access Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app, and it's mandatory for your first API key.
Can I switch my ChatGPT email from a temp address to my real one?
Yes, on ChatGPT for the web under Settings > Account, as long as you can still open the temporary inbox. Once that mailbox expires, the self-service change won't work, and OpenAI support can't override it.
Can I use ChatGPT without an email?
Yes, logged out at chatgpt.com, with one unsaved conversation at a time (not yet in Europe outside the UK). Some countries also allow phone-only sign-up, but a paid plan still requires a verified email.
Why didn't my ChatGPT verification email arrive?
Give it a minute, since the inbox refreshes about every 15 seconds, and check the address for typos before resending. If it still doesn't arrive, OpenAI may not accept that domain, so try a new address.
Is it safe to use temp mail for ChatGPT?
It's fine for a short-lived account, but don't keep anything you'd miss on an address that expires. Read is temporary email safe and legal for the bigger picture.
